The OMD Event 2005, was born several months back after the two people behind the event decided to hold a full blown fan event, Neil Taylor and Paul Browne spent many nights throwing ideas around on how to try to make another event special for fans. It was decided to try and do this over 3 days. We hope that the fans that did attend, liked the ideas that we came up with.
So what did happen??
Friday-
The intention of the Friday, was to be a sort of break the ice night where the fans that could make it, could meet each other for the first time, and be relaxed, and all booked into the hotel ready for the full days on the Saturday and Sunday.
So from 5.00pm - 8.PM we had registration at the hotel, where you could get your OMD Event magazine, name badges and a schedule of what was going to happen.
Around 9.PM, we had a short welcome ceremony , with a brief run down on what was to happen at the event, as well as thanks to those that had helped.
We held a game of Bingo! which was just for a little fun, and after this, our intention was to run some OMD videos, but due to a technical problem, this was unable to take place.
We did do a "beat the intro" game, which was also going to be a taster for some things on the Saturday, although the fans did not know this. Then right at the very last minute, Chi prepared a OMD quiz, and what a job he did, with short notice.
Then a few drinks, and time to get some sleep.
Saturday-
We had registration open from 9.00am for the fans that did not make it up on the Friday. We did intend to start our Memorabilia Display at 10.00am, but this ended up a little late! But we did manage to open up our little show, with some great things to see for the fans. This included some of Martin Coopers paintings, and some other rare things, that we were going to have up for auction later in the day.
We also played some never, heard OMD tracks, these were "For The Greater Good" "Self Destruct" and "Neon Lights" with Kraftwerk vocals, these tracks have never been heard before (apart from a sneak preview on the Friday) and the tracks are unable to purchase anywhere!
We then had a session called "OMD Unreleased Project" done by Paul Browne, Paul did a good job with this, with information on the OMD unreleased project.
The bring and buy session then followed with chance to buy and sell any OMD memorabilia.
After this we held the charity auction with many rare and unique items up for grabs, this raised a good sum of money for the 2 charities, that the OMD Event web site is supporting.
Our Guest Questions and Answer session then followed, this was with Paul and Claudia from onetwo, who answered all questions asked, and more, and then they took the time and trouble for autographs, and photographs.
We then had a break so that everyone could get some food, and get changed etc ready for the nights event.
Around 7.00pm the evening started with our DJ Stu, who has ever did such a good job, some low level songs got played in preparation for the Mesh Twins, who did a live show, featuring there versions of old and newer OMD tracks, and some other things. As always the Twins, did a good job, and they get better as time goes on.
A huge surprise we had was the playing of the single "Sister Marie Says" this was the very first time that this had been played in public, and was the only time fans had heard this track, but it did get played a couple more times during the OMD disco, with the dance floor filled each time.
Another "new" single for OMD fans was also played, but not by OMD this was by The Satin Dolls, a project that Andy has an interest in, and the song "Walk Away" was played. Amazing to see the dance floor filled while this track was on.
We also held a "Glow Stick" dance to Stanlow, which looked brilliant . Music went on till 1.AM and after this fans all met up in the main bar, with new friendships being formed.
Some stayed up till the very late hours, and even a strange game of "hide and seek" took place.....
Sunday-
Up for a big English breakfast and time to check out of hotel rooms ready for the coach trip that left at 10.AM, an over to the Red Frame White light telephone box, and the Railway Inne. Here the BBC did the radio interview with some fans, Steve, Kerstin and Sara, which was broadcast the following day on BBC Radio Mersyside.
Lots of photographs, and videos got shot here, and Corky took the fans and showed them Andy and Paul's old houses, where they used to live. Then back on the coach for some food.. stopping off at a "Tesco" strange but true. Then it was toilet time, and a local pub was visited!!
Next we drove through Liverpool, to show the fans "The Motor Museum" all gathered out side, and Neil Taylor, said "I wonder if anyone is in?" a press of a door bell, and the door opened, and into the studio everyone went.
Then out of a door came Andy, followed by Paul.. silence filled the room for a moment, with Andy and Paul getting in position to take a question and answer session.
Many questions got thrown at both Andy and Paul, and some great answers given back, including news that Andy and Paul, would be back working together again, and OMD should be reformed in the future.
After the Q&A it was time for photographs and autographs, and much time was given to allow each fan to meet Paul and Andy.
Back onto the coach for the journey home.
I think that it is safe to say, that the 3 day OMD Event was way beyond the expectations of any fan, that had taken the time and trouble to attend, and as it says in the OMD Event magazine, we hope that everyone went home with a head full of brilliant dreams.
